Green Valley, California Details
The earliest human inhabitants of the area were the Patwin and Suisun Indians, followed by the Spanish explorers who began to settle the area in the early nineteenth century. In 1835, the Mexican government colonized the region north of San Francisco Bay until the California Republic was established in 1846. Later, Solano was one of the first counties of California, established when its statehood was gained in 1850. Solano County place names reflect the early Native American, Spanish, and Mexican history. In fact, the name “Solano” itself comes from Chief Solano, a local Native chief who took on the name Francisco Solano when he was baptized at a Catholic mission. As the nearby San Francisco Bay Area grew and underwent a population boom in the latter half of the nineteenth century, the nearby Solano County (and Green Valley) began to grow as well. The discovery of gold in the valley by prospectors not too long before the turn of the century also helped draw people to the area.
A main draw of the valley, and indeed much of its draw and tourism, comes from the premier vineyards in the region. The valley has a maritime climate due to being near San Pablo Bay, which is the perfect climate for the vineyards on the valley floor to flourish. In addition to wine tasting, recreational activities abound in the form of hiking and horseback riding in the nearby hills and mountains, as well as boating and kayaking in the nearby bays. In fact, Solano County includes part of the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which hosts a variety of species in the bay, estuaries, wetlands, and tidal marshes.
The nearby Solano County cities of Vallejo, Dixon, and Fairfield offer dining, cultural activities and a multitude of shopping and businesses. Fairfield is the county seat and is considered the midpoint between Sacramento and San Francisco, an indication of Green Valley’s prime location. The region also has a strong military presence due to the Travis Air Force Base located east of Fairfield.
In terms of public transportation, various bus lines can be found in the Solano County cities of Vallejo, Fairfield, Suisun City, Vacaville, and Rio Vista, as well as connections to the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). There also numerous Greyhound and Amtrak options to travel long distance between various California cities. There are two small municipal airports in Solano County, as well as access to the larger airports in the nearby cities. Major highways that pass through the area are I-80, I-505, I-680, and I-780.
The racial makeup of Green Valley is predominantly white with African American, Hispanic, and Asian influences as indicated in the latest census, though Solano County itself has a very high degree of racial and ethnic diversity. Solano County also has the largest Filipino population of any county in the United States. With less than 700 households in the entire valley, the valley is fairly rural, a nice country refuge from the cities nearby. The valley’s median age is 55.5, which makes this is a perfect region for retirees looking to settle in a beautiful place. It is also perfect for families who want to raise their children in a lush area with lots of fresh air, surrounded by natural beauty. Crime in the valley itself is nearly nonexistent, with Solano County’s largest city of Vallejo having the highest crime rate of the region. Vallejo has a population of 115,942.
The latest census information puts the median household income of the valley as $91,893. The median home value is $576, 400, and the cost of a family home (3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms) rages from $400K to $700K, with more luxurious, larger homes upward of $1 million.
