Dixon, California Information
Located 21 miles west of Sacramento, Dixon sits in beautiful northern Solano County. It lies southeast of Davis, a university center, amidst farmlands in a rapidly growing transportation corridor along busy Interstate 80. The highway serves as a major east-west route connecting the state capital with the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. The town arose in 1852 in the wake of the California gold rush.

By 2014, the growing community reported a population of 19,164. It expanded in size by over 50% since the 1990s. Slightly over half the population described themselves as exclusively Caucasian (50.7%), with 11.5% tracing their ancestry to Ireland and 7.4% to England. The community reflects strong Mexican cultural influences, too. Some 41.5% of residents report purely Hispanic roots. Mixed-race, Black and Asian racial minorities also live here. Only 0.01% claim Native American ethnicity today. Almost one fifth of the city’s population, 17.4%, reported being born in Latin America, so numerous recent immigrants have relocated to this area.
The populations consists predominantly of employed “blue collar” high school graduates. Among residents over the age of 25, some 80.8% hold high school diplomas and slightly more than one out of five (22.1%) matriculated from a college or graduate school. The town does not host any junior college or college level educational institutions. About 30% of the adult inhabitants work in the city, with a larger percentage commuting to work nearby. Unemployment stood at 5.3% in September, 2015, slightly below the state average. In 2013, some 11% of residents fell within the poverty range, however.
Retail activities and construction represent leading economic activities in the community. Government employment, manufacturing and education also employ a large number of residents.
The populations enjoys excellent access to road transportation. In addition to the nearby highway, an Amtrak terminal 9 miles away in Davis, offers passenger railroad service. The town also boasts a small local airport with a single runway, Maine Prairie Airport. A medical clinic and two dialysis centers serve this town.
Although the city suffered high crime statistics around the turn of the century, during the recession in 2008 the rate began falling. It dropped sharply before gradually trending upwards again. In 2014, the crime rate stood at 217.8 on a scale in which 287.5 represents the national average in the United States. Presently this location enjoys a considerably lower crime rate than most other cities.
An earthquake struck the region in 1892. Seismic activity remains an ongoing local concern today in this part of California.

Currently in December, 2016, of the four rental houses here most recently listed on Zillow, rental asking prices ranged from a low of $1,450 per month for a two-bedroom one-bath home to $2,395 per month for a five-bedroom three-bath home.
The town underwent a significant construction boom during the period between 2002 and 2004, with a steep jump in the number of building permits issued for new houses. This figure fell sharply during the recession later in the decade, but it began to rebound slightly in 2014. Housing prices fell steeply beginning in 2007, reaching a low in 2012 before rebounding vigorously. The median for-sale price of housing in the town in December, 2016 stands at $396,500. The Zillow.com website presently characterizes the local real estate market as “stable”.
