Suisun City, population 29,000, is a small town in Solano County, California. Solano County is one of the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area, home to more than 100 individual incorporated cities. The unusually high concentration of cities in this region combined with the generally Mediterranean climate gives this part of California a character more reminiscent of Europe in terms of urban amenities than can be found in most parts of the U.S.

Its affordability and more low-key character make it a very family-friendly county. In fact, up to 40 percent of working adults in the county commute to a job outside of the county. Living here allows them to take advantage of the relatively low housing costs for the region while working at well paid jobs of their preference in adjacent counties.
This small town is roughly midway between the state capitol of Sacramento and the largest city in California, San Francisco. The pedestrian-friendly community of Suisun City, California boasts the only Amtrak station in the county, making it an ideal place to live for would-be Bay Area or Sacramento commuters.
Suisun City is also cheek-to-jowl with downtown Fairfield, the county seat. You can easily walk to downtown Fairfield to take advantage of a great deal more shopping and other amenities.
If you aren’t living without a car, being so close to Fairfield also gives easy access to the main campus of Solano Community College, a large and excellent educational institution. With approximately 11,000 students, it is able to offer classes typically unavailable at community colleges. In fact, its curriculum is well reputed as a regional resource. For example, it offers Latin classes that are sometimes taken by students in other nearby counties, often those pursuing a medical education of some sort.
This delightful small city is the location of an astonishingly successful revitalization plan that gets used as a case study in how to do such things right. Some years ago, the leaders of this small community completely re-envisioned the city and thereby transformed the waterfront from an industrial eyesore to the heart of the city. The dreamed big, but also succeeded in remaining pragmatic and realistic.
The waterfront is now home to the beautiful and inspiring municipal building and a live-work zoned housing/commercial district. It raised the quality of life and property values enough that the city was able to successfully pay for the financing they had arranged for this major overhaul, leaving the city better off in every way than before this major project.
The dramatically successful revitalization project, plus the town’s location in the San Francisco Bay Area — and the existence of the Amtrak station right here in Suisun City — makes this a surprisingly sophisticated, forward-looking place to live. It does not have the usual small town vibe. Instead, it combines many of the best features of being in a small town with some of the most desirable aspects that many people find alluring in a more urban environment.
The local population is also quite diverse. For the 2010 Census, the city reported a racial makeup that self-identified as 44.44 percent White, 19.31 percent African American, and 17.69 percent Asian. It also has a high percentage of people who identify as Hispanic, mixed race and/or other races.
As of November 2016, the median home value in Suisun City is $336,600. The live-work housing along the waterfront is an unusual form of real estate. These homes tend to cost a bit more, but they come with added value for the right residents.
As of December 2016, the median rent for a studio apartment in this town was $940 a month. The median rent for a one bedroom (house or apartment) came in at $1,170. The median rent on a two bedroom was $1,470. Median rent for a three bedroom was $2,140 and the median rent for a four bedroom was $2,570.
Happily, the average household income is higher than average. The location is not terribly far from the coast nor from the mountains. This lovely city gives easy access to both outdoor adventures, like hiking in Muir Woods, and to to big city amenities in places like San Francisco or Sacramento.
