Vallejo is in Solana County, California in the San Francisco Bay area. It was the state capital in 1852 and then again in 1853. The sulfur springs in the area attracted the early European settlers. The east side consists of “manor neighborhoods,” including Steffan Manor, Skyview Terrace, Granada Hills, Somerset Highlands, and Northgate.
On the north side, there are more subdivisions, such as College Hills, College Park, and Country Club Crest, which is referred to as “Crest Side” by local rappers. The Chabot Terrace subdivision, built in the 1940’s, was a wartime government subsidized housing project. The Lofas-Lakeside subdivision was built in the 1950’s by contractor, B. W. Williams and was the first African-American subdivision in the city.
The south side includes the original 1800’s settlement of “Sandy Beach,” which were originally fishing shacks. The Winslow House, built in 1860 by George Greenwood and bought by Isaac Winslow in 1891, is the oldest known house in the city. The Starr Mansion, built in 1869 by Abraham Dubois Starr, is also on the south side and is now serving as a bed and breakfast. Much of the housing on the south side was built in the 1980’s and includes higher-priced housing.
The area was originally inhabited by Native American Patwin tribes such as the Coastal Miwok and the Suisunes. Then all of the California territory came under the control of Spain from 1769 to 1821. After gaining its independence, Mexico gained control of the territory in 1821. The city and surrounding areas were part of the 84,000-acre (340 km) Rancho Suscol Mexican land grant to General Mariano Guadelupe Vallejo by Governor Manuel Micheltorena in 1843. In 1846, Anglo immigrants revolted against Mexican rule of the territory in what was called the Bear Flag Revolt. The General was imprisoned at
Sutter’s Fort, and the territory became part of the United States. The General subsequently supported the annexation and became a leading advocate for California’s statehood. He was then elected to the California Senate, and the city was named after him. Nearby Benicia is named in honor of his wife, Francisca Benicia Carillo de Vallejo.

In April 2010, 44,443 housing units existed in the city of which 56.4 percent were owner-occupied. From 2011 to 2015, the median value of the owner-occupied housing was $231,700. With a mortgage, the median monthly cost of that housing was $1,837 in the same time period. Without a mortgage, the median monthly cost of that housing was $399 in the same time period. The median gross monthly rent from was $1,216 in that time period.
